Warehouse & Logistics Robots: System-Level Compliance
Warehouse automation is rarely one robot. It is robots + conveyors + shuttles + software + people at pick faces, all moving fast. Compliance lives at those interfaces.
Where risk concentrates
- Pick-face access, reach-in, and ergonomic / crush hazards
- Conveyor transfer points and sortation ejection
- Maintenance access inside racking and AS/RS zones
- Throughput pressure that incentivises bypassing safeguards
- Fleet / WMS software that can change safety-relevant behaviour
Integrator duties
Whoever places the integrated system into service as machinery owns the system risk assessment (ISO 12100), safeguarding strategy (ISO 13849-1, guards/interlocks/ESPE), validation records, and operator/maintenance instructions — even when every component arrived CE-marked.
Practical sequence
- Draw the system boundary (including software and manual stations)
- Hazard-analyse by task: normal operation, replenishment, jam clearing, maintenance
- Design safeguarding per task, not per brochure
- Validate at real throughput, then lock change control on safety-relevant software
