Product certification for United Kingdom

UKCA, designated standards, and UK Responsible Person

Great Britain uses UKCA under UK product regulations that largely mirror former EU directives. Northern Ireland continues to use CE for many goods. Plan markings, Responsible Person, and designated standards carefully.

How United Kingdom regulates products

After Brexit, GB requires conformity with UK law (Electrical Equipment Safety Regulations, EMC Regulations, Radio Equipment Regulations, Supply of Machinery, Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres, RoHS, etc.). UKCA marking and a UK Declaration of Conformity are the default for GB. CE remains relevant for Northern Ireland and for dual CE+UKCA strategies during transition policies. A UK Responsible Person / importer obligations apply for non-UK manufacturers.

Marking summary

UKCA for Great Britain. Keep CE for EU and often for Northern Ireland. Check current government guidance on CE acceptance timelines for GB — policies have evolved; verify before production print runs.

Typical pathway

  1. 1

    Split markets

GB vs NI vs EU — marking and economic operator roles differ.

  2. 2

    Designated standards

Confirm UK designated list vs EU OJ list dates.

  3. 3

    Assessment

Self-declare or engage UK Approved Body.

  4. 4

    UKCA & RP

Mark, UK DoC, appoint UK Responsible Person if needed.

Common pitfalls

Issues that delay customs, retail acceptance, or lab projects.

Printing only CE for GB-only SKUs when UKCA is required
Using EU Notified Body certificates without UK Approved Body coverage when modules require it
Ignoring NI CE obligations while shipping “UK” stock

FAQ

Can I use EU test reports for UKCA?

Often as technical evidence if standards align, but the legal declaration, marking, and Approved Body identity must follow UK rules.
