Service & Field Robots: Outdoor and Harsh-Site Compliance Basics
Field robots — inspection quadrupeds, outdoor delivery platforms, solar-cleaning robots, mining machines — trade the controlled factory for weather, traffic, and remote sites. The file must follow them there.
What changes outdoors
- Ingress, temperature, vibration, and UV actually determine safety availability
- Loss-of-link, recovery, and remote e-stop behaviour are primary safety functions
- Interaction with site vehicles and plant machinery replaces fence-line thinking
- Battery swapping/charging happens in depots, not lab benches
When ATEX / IECEx enters
Only if the robot will enter classified explosive atmospheres. Then Ex protection concepts drive enclosure, surface temperature, and battery design — decide from the site area classification, not from marketing copy.
Evidence map
- Operational design domain (terrain, weather, traffic, supervision)
- Machinery risk assessment (ISO 12100) + safety controls (ISO 13849-1)
- Environmental / IP evidence matched to that domain
- EMC/RED for industrial/outdoor radio environments; battery transport + safety
