The Product Environmental Compliance Stack: RoHS, Packaging, EPR, and Claims
Environmental compliance is a stack. Teams that only track RoHS still get surprised by packaging EPR invoices, plastic taxes, or advertising challenges on “eco” claims.
Stack layers
- Substances in the product — RoHS, REACH, Prop 65 warnings, PFAS watchlists
- Packaging — material IDs, recycled content, packaging EPR registrations
- Product EPR — WEEE/batteries/electronics take-back where applicable
- Information & labeling — sorting marks, QR disclosures, language rules
- Marketing claims — green claims must be specific, evidence-based, and not misleading
Operating model that works
- One SKU master record with market columns (EU, UK, US states, etc.)
- Owner per layer (engineering for substances, ops for packaging EPR, legal for claims)
- Change control that blocks ship if a layer is red
FAQ
Where do EUDR / deforestation rules fit?
They target specific commodities/supply chains. If your packaging or materials include in-scope inputs, add a due-diligence workstream — do not assume RoHS covers it.
