Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Products: Compliance Touchpoints Beyond “It’s Green”
Hydrogen products attract climate marketing — and rigorous safety scrutiny. Electrical listing alone is rarely enough when gas handling, ventilation, and ignition control are in play.
Touchpoints to inventory
- Electrical product safety for power electronics and controls
- EMC for converters and high di/dt switching
- Gas detection, ventilation, and purge logic as safety functions
- Pressure equipment / piping codes where applicable
- Hazardous area classification around vents, fittings, and indoor installations
- Materials compatibility (hydrogen embrittlement, seals)
Ex reality check
Hydrogen is Gas Group IIC territory in many IEC frameworks — equipment selection and cable glands get expensive fast. Decide early whether the electronics live in a purged cabinet, remote safe area, or true Ex certification path.
Pilot project advice
- Separate lab demo rules from commercial placement rules.
- Document leak scenarios and detector coverage in the risk file.
- Coordinate functional safety (shutdowns) with Ex ignition control assumptions.
FAQ
Is fuel cell CE the same as battery CE?
No. Different hazards and often different directive/standard stacks. Do not reuse a battery technical file blindly.
