Agricultural & Forestry Robots: Field Compliance Basics
Agricultural and forestry products range from PTO implements to fully autonomous weeding robots. The compliance question is never just “robot or not” — it is field domain, bystanders, road use, and energy sources together.
Standards to start from
- ISO 4254 series — agricultural machinery safety
- ISO 18497 — highly automated agricultural machines, design principles
- ISO 12100 + ISO 13849-1 — risk assessment and safety controls
- Tractor / vehicle type-approval interfaces where road travel is intended
Field-specific hazards
- PTO and implement entanglement; guarding that survives real maintenance
- Autonomous operation near bystanders, livestock, and public roads
- Spraying / chemical application interfaces
- Slopes, stability, remote supervision, and recovery of a stuck machine
Define the operational domain
Fields are uncontrolled environments. Document where the machine may operate, who may be present, how supervision works, and what it does on loss of link or perception failure — before arguing standards.
