Product certification for Italy
EU CE rules + Italian importer documentation practice
Italy applies EU CE requirements. Practical success depends on complete technical files, Italian-language materials for consumers, and responsive importers under market surveillance.
Italy is an EU Member State. Core product law is EU-wide (CE marking). This page adds local authorities, language, and market-surveillance practice on top of the EU framework.
How Italy regulates products
Manufacturers place CE-marked products on the Italian market under EU law. The Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy and chamber/customs processes interact with MSA requests. Italian translations of safety instructions are expected for consumer products; B2B industrial products still need usable Italian or agreed language per contract and GPSR/NLF transparency.
Key frameworks
- CE marking (EU Single Market)
- LVD / EMC / RED as applicable
- RoHS & REACH
- National language labeling & market surveillance

Marking summary
CE mark is mandatory for in-scope products placed on the EU market. Member-state language and national market-surveillance practices apply on top of EU law — not instead of it.
Typical pathway
- 1
Confirm EU scope
Identify every applicable directive/regulation — products often need several.
- 2
Select standards
Use current Official Journal harmonized (or common) standards for presumption of conformity.
- 3
Test & assess
Coordinate accredited labs; involve a Notified Body only when the legislation requires it.
- 4
Document & mark
Build technical file, sign EU DoC, affix CE, appoint EU AR if needed, localize labels/IFU.
Common pitfalls
Issues that delay customs, retail acceptance, or lab projects.
FAQ
Can I sell with English-only CE docs in Italy?
Technical file can be in a language accepted by the MSA (often English for industrial), but consumer-facing safety information should be in Italian.
