Explosion-Protected Lighting (Ex Luminaires)

Luminaires combine heat, glass, and electrical parts—exactly what area classification controls. Selecting the right Ex fixture reduces ignition risk and avoids costly rework. This note covers the essentials for project engineers and maintenance leads.

Start With the Area Classification

Confirm zone or division, gas group (or dust group), and required temperature class or code. The luminaire marking must cover all three. A Division 2 or Zone 2 rating is not automatically valid in Division 1 or Zone 1 unless the certificate says so.

Protection Concept

Common approaches

  • Ex d (flameproof): Heavy enclosures; lamp changes follow strict procedures.
  • Ex e (increased safety): Often used for terminals; watch permitted lamp types.
  • Ex n or restricted breathing: May apply in Zone 2 or Division 2 when the certificate allows.

LED retrofits and driver swaps must stay within the certificate: same manufacturer-approved modules and thermal design.

Mounting and Maintenance

Install with the correct cable glands and torque. For flameproof units, preserve flame paths and use only listed gaskets. Relamping or opening the enclosure should follow the manual; record the work in your equipment register.

Remember: Surface temperature under fault and normal operation must remain within the T-class or dust ignition temperature limits for your process.

HazloLabs can review luminaire schedules against your classification drawings and flag mismatches before purchase orders close.
